About GnuDoyng

Hi there! :D Though I may be better known as GnuDoyng, I would prefer you to call me George. My surname is Ngu (IPA: [ŋu]), a Foochow romanization of the Chinese character “牛”. To give an informal self-introduction, I would describe myself with a list of things such as a married post-80, a telecommunication programmer, a religious/political rightist, and a stupid dumb nerd.

Christianity

I am a Methodist. Curiously, I keep being asked why I choose to cling to a specific denomination whereas Protestantism in Mainland China puts so little emphasis on denominations. My answer is, it is a historical or cultural issue rather than a religious one. My hometown Fuzhou (known as Foochow in the old days) was the first city in East Asia where Methodism took root (1847). We Methodists share a common heritage with all other Christians. We believe in one God the Creator, whose love and grace can be experienced by us. We believe that Jesus the Son of God is our Savior. In Christ we receive abundant life and forgiveness of sins. And we believe that the Holy Spirit is God with us.

God has called me into many different ministries. The first and foremost one is to love my wife as Jesus loves His Church. The one that comes after is to do amateur research on Foochow Mission History, which is one of the major reasons why I have set up this personal website. I have also set up a Sina Weibo account @福州基督教会史 to publish on this subject. Follow Sina Weibo if you are interested and, of course, literate in Chinese.

Linguistic diversity

I believe that all languages are equal. Sadly, however, experts estimate that half of the world’s languages will have ceased to be spoken by the end of this century (some say 3/4 or even more). Since the awakening of my cultural identity, I’ve been trying to do my best to ensure that my mother tongue, Fuzhou dialect, is not one of them. And of course, I also support the promotion of all other minor languages. Fight the good fight with me against all forms of language discrimination.

And a multitude of others...

I am a man with peculiar tastes. Besides what I mentioned previously, I also have great passion in almost every field in humanities: history, philosophy, religions, literature, linguistics, sociology, art, music, movies, etc.

  • As a bibliophile I’m always extravagant in purchasing all kinds of books I love. Come and have a look at my bookshelf in aNobii, and don’t forget to drop a message there if you think we are like-minded.
  • English is not my native language, so I need more practice. This is one of the many reasons I chose to write this website in English. I’m running a blog “Wishing Upon a Star...” where you can read my fragmented thoughts. Please leave a note of your visit.
